In A Year Where Nigeria’s 4 Biggest Music Exports Dropped A Project, Who Wins?
It’s getting closer to that time of the Year again where we rank projects released during a calendar year. Unlike the previous year, this year came guns blazing. We got projects from Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, Adekunle Gold, Kizz Daniel, and several others. This year has also been a major breakout year for several upcoming acts like Omah Lay, Chike, and Bella Shmurda. It’s not the time for ranking or detailed analysis yet, this is only a summarizing look into the projects of our biggest exports.
1. Burna – Twice As Tall
This year Burna’s only competition was himself. He became the first Nigerian to rank #54 on the billboard 200, this is highly remarkable. It was the range of the album for me, the album addressed societal ills (Monsters you made), life’s struggle (No fit vex, Real life), love (Onyeka), and a lot more. This album is blessed and I can’t wait to share my opinion with everyone at the end of the year.
For a lot of Wizkid fans this album was everything, it was great seeing Wizkid being so happy and enjoying making music again. It showed how much Wizkid had grown in character and sound. Although, we expected a heavily influenced African sound on this album but it wasn’t as we hoped for. Wizkid rather took to sounding like an RnB Artiste. He sounded Relaxed as he sang about women, weed, grace, and life. It was also obvious how he tried to put upcoming artistes like Tems and Terri on. Ginger featuring Burna Boy is a special mention on this album. A lot to discuss at the end of the year.
3. Olamide – Carpe Diem
This album! Carpe Diem is Olamide’s best project in years. Like the title suggests you enjoy the moment and forget the future, it really lived up to the title. The project was a personal one to me as Olamide gave us insight into his battle with depression on Triumphant featuring Bella Shmurda, he also gave us lots of repackaged street vibes on tracks like Infinity, Do better and Loading. I’m looking forward to diving into how much his numbers improved, how great the production was and how selective the features were at the end of the year. Olamide Badoo was deeply in his bag on this one.
4. Davido – A Better Time:
Davido never fails to deliver when it comes to vibes and this wasn’t an exception. Each track on this album was recorded with a mindset of making a hit and songs that can easily be performed on stage by using catchy hooks which delivered the vibe and fun but took away the cohesiveness of the project. The project included special international figures like Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown and Young Thug. Although Davido is yet to give us a perfect project, A Better Time gave us a glimpse that we are closer than before. Can’t wait to break this album down and share my opinion with readers.
While staying unbiased in my opinion I’ll be looking into these projects and more at the end of the year. Let me know what opinions you have or you will also like to read about in the comments. Till then I remain
