“My Government Created Three Refineries” – Gowon Boast

General (rtd), former head of state, has stated that three refineries were built by his government in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna for domestic consumption. Speaking at the second International Conference and Exhibition of the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) in Lagos on Monday, April 15, the former head of state added that his administration had plans to build more refineries to export refined products, instead of giving the crude to various countries, Vanguard reports.

Reports gathers that Gowon said: “I will like you to know that during our time, our plan was to build five export-oriented refineries to export instead of giving the crude to various countries.

“The three refineries, Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna, were designed for domestic consumption and we had planned that if our consumption grows more than the three can do, we will transfer one of the export-oriented refineries for home consumption.”

Also at the event, minister of state for petroleum resources, Ibe Kachikwu, said in order to protect Nigerians, it will be impossible for government to remove fuel subsidy at this time.

Noting that the government was mindful of the possible impact of subsidy removal on the people, Kachikwu said: “Any president that is going to take that decision will have to weigh all the factors. Some of the factors, I don’t have here.”

On the issue of shortage, the minister further disclosed that there is enough petrol in stock for the next 28 days. He said: “I went around Lagos this morning (Monday). The fuel situation was just a logistics issue as available stocks can last for 28 days.” 

Meanwhile, reports came previously that the minister of state for petroleum, Ibe kachikwu, revealed that it would be saddening if the nation’s refineries were not functional by the end of 2019. According to him, the present administration is committed to ensuring that the importation of petroleum products is curtailed.
